‘The Source of the Moon’ by Benjamin Williams Leader R.A. (1931-1923).
The painting is signed by the artist and dated 1875. It is presented in a newly commissioned gold metal leaf frame.
Meaning “Moon River” in English, Afon Lloer is a watercourse in Snowdonia, North Wales which flows from the high mountain lake Ffynnon Lloer. As the headwater of the Moon River, the Old Welsh name for the lake (or llyn) literally means “the source of the moon”. A renowned beauty spot for centuries, Ffynnon Lloer was a popular destination for intrepid Victorian sightseers in the 19th century. When Leader visited the lake in 1875 it was still only accessible via a three hour walk from the village of Capel Curig.
