The Lord Chamberlain’s Men performing Love’s Labour’s Lost for Elizabeth I

‘The Lord Chamberlain’s Men performing Love’s Labour’s Lost for Elizabeth I’ by Robert Alexander Hillingford (1825-1904).
The Lord Chamberlain’s Men was England's foremost theatre company during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Many of the troop's plays were written by its most famous member William Shakespeare. In his famous comedy ‘Love’s Labour’s Lost’ the characters attempt to stage a popular masque called ‘The Nine Worthies’ which descends into chaos. Depicted left is one of the principals; Don Adriano de Armado, a loquacious Spanish knight who thinks himself a great lover. In the centre of the scene sits a flatteringly young and beautiful Elizabeth I. The Queen’s facial features are those of Robert Hillingford’s Italian wife Teresa Maria who was the model for so many of the female characters in the artist’s paintings.
‘The Hillingford Chronicles’, a detailed account of the life and work of the artist, can be found at the News & Articles page of the Academy Fine Paintings website.
