‘The Fortress of Charlemont’ by George Clarkson Stanfield (1828-1878).
The painting – which depicts the 16th century stronghold built by Emperor Charles V at the French town of Givet in 1555 – is signed by the artist and presented in a bespoke gold metal leaf frame.
Although he attended the Royal Academy Schools, George Clarkson Stanfield was primarily trained by his father Clarkson Frederick Standfield R.A. (1793-1867), one the most eminent British artists of the 19th century. Stanfield made his Royal Academy debut aged 16 where he exhibited a total of 49 paintings between 1844 to 1876. in addition to 73 at the British Institution.
