A fine 19th century oil painting of a famous scene from William Shakespeare’s ‘The Taming of the Screw’ by the celebrated listed British Victorian painter, Robert Alexander Hillingford (1828-1904).

Hillingford became famous for his paintings of British military campaigns such as Waterloo, Sebastopol, and the Peninsular War, as well as his wonderfully detailed Shakespearian scenes. This outstanding work features the entrance of Petruchio and Kate in Act 4, Scene 1 of ‘The Taming of the Shrew’, and bears an old handwritten transcription from the scene verso.

Hillingford exhibited 29 works at the Royal Academy between 1866-1902, as well at the British Institution and Suffolk Street.
