'La Fille de la Nymphe' by Auguste-Émile Pinchart (1842-1920).
The painting - which depicts a girl teasing a bust of the god Pan with a reed - is signed by the artist and presented in a superb quality, bespoke gold metal leaf frame.
In Greek mythology, when the lustful Pan attempted to seduce a nymph by the name of Syrinx, she ran to a nearby river and asked for assistance from the water nymphs, the Naiads. As Pan reached out to grab Syrinx the Naiads transformed her into a cluster of water reeds. When Pan let out a frustrated sigh, his breath blew across the hollow reeds producing a haunting tune. These reeds became the Pipes of Pan.
