Italian-born painter Virgilio Tojetti moved to Paris in the 1860s to study with Jean-Léon Gérôme and William Bouguereau. In 1870 he moved to live and work in the US, first in San Francisco, before settling in New York in 1883 where he painted important murals in the Savoy Hotel and Hoffman House. He exhibited with the Boston Art Club, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Brooklyn Art Association. Tojetti’s work was also much in demand back in Rome where he was commissioned by both Pope Gregory XVI and Pius IX.
