‘Galleons by Moonlight’ by Sebastian Pether (1793-1844).
The painting - which depicts sailors unloading cargo from a large 18th century square rigger beneath a full moon – is presented in a fine swept and pierced giltwood frame.
Sebastian Pether was one of the most gifted and popular painters of moonlit capriccio landscapes in the first half of the 19th century. So popular in fact that a great many copies and lookalikes of his paintings were commissioned by Victorian dealers and to this day are often sold as being by or “attributed to” the artist. The painting being sold here is a rare example of the real thing.
