‘The Lulu Bob’ by Eva Sawyer (1885-1978).

Signed and dated 1926, the portrait is the earliest known record of the Lulu Bob style in British art. Newly professionally mounted on acid-free board, framed, and glazed behind UV resistant ArtGlass™. The picture is inscribed by the artist verso identifying the sitter as "Miss Liddell".

The relaxation of Edwardian formality that followed the end of the First World War encouraged young women in The Roaring Twenties to begin wearing their hair short and “bobbed” hair became a symbol of independence and liberation. The American actresses Lousie Brooks and Colleen Moore adopted the Lulu (or Shingle) Bob in 1925, meaning Miss Liddell would have been one of (if not) the first girl in England to have the style.

Eveline Mysie Sawyer exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, and in 1936 a month-long exhibition of her work was held at the Cooling Galleries in New Bond Street in London.
