'Ardvreck Castle, Loch Assynt' by Henry Bright (1810-1873).

The painting depicts the ruins of the famous Scottish castle and of Calda House, the 17th century manor house of Clan Mackenzie in Sutherland. Ardvreck Castle was built in the 15th century by the MacLeod family, Laird’s of Assynt. It was captured and sacked by the Mackenzie’s 1672 who subsequently built Calda House which was itself destroyed by fire in 1737.

Henry Bright was an eminent painter of English and Scottish topographical scenes in oils and watercolours. A native of East Anglia, he is associated with the Norwich School and studied under three of the Society’s most important members; John Sell Cotman, Alfred Stannard and John Berney Crome.

Between 1836 and 1876 Henry Bright exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, the Royal Society of British Artists, and the New Watercolour Society as well as with the Norwich Society. Today, paintings by Henry Bright can be found in the Victoria & Albert Museum, the National Maritime Museum, the Ashmolean Museum of Oxford University, the Fitzwilliam Museum of Cambridge University, Glasgow Museum, Manchester Art Gallery, the National Museum in Cardiff, Sheffield Art Gallery, Norfolk Museums, York Art Gallery, Russel-Cotes Art Gallery, and the Yale Centre for British Art in Connecticut among many others.
