‘Castelli di Cannero, Lake Maggiore’ by George Clarkson Stanfield (1828-1878).
The painting – which depicts the ruins of the 16th century Rocca Vitaliana fortress on Lago Maggiore in Northern Italy – is signed by the artist and presented in a bespoke gold metal leaf frame.
Although he attended the Royal Academy Schools, George Clarkson Stanfield was primarily trained by his father Clarkson Standfield R.A. (1793-1867), one the most eminent British artists of the 19th century. George Clarkson Stanfield made his Royal Academy debut aged 16, and exhibited a total of 49 paintings at Burlington House between 1844 to 1876, in addition to 73 at the British Institution.
