Franz von Lenbach studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts under the eminent German Realist painter Karl Theodor von Piloty (1826-1886). Lenbach was a star pupil and accompanied Piloty on a working trip to Rome during which time his reputation continued to grow. In 1867 he won a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle and his international reputation was made in 1869 when – although in competition with many of the most prominent French artists of the day – he was awarded the gold medal at the Glaspalast in Munich. From 1870 he exhibited at the most important international venues in London, Vienna, and Paris where he won a prestigious Grand Prix medal. In 1882, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown, and later became a Knight in the Legion of Honour.
Among Franz von Lenbach’s most famous paintings are portraits of William Gladstone, Richard Wagner, Pope Leo XIII, Johann Strauss, Emperor Franz Josef, King Ludwig I of Bavaria, Emperor Wilhelm II, and Count Otto von Bismarck.
