Nathaniel Sichel initially studied under Julius Schrader (1815-1900) in the academic tradition at the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin before enrolling at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris. Sichel’s success in the 1864 Prix de Rome with a painting entitled ‘Joseph explains the Dreams of the Pharaoh’ made his reputation as a painter of Orientalist subjects. During the 1860s and 70s Nathaniel Sichel became one of the most popular portrait painters in Germany and a leading artist of the Orientalist School, making a speciality of well-drawn and elegantly painted figures.
