The painting -which depicts a young Italian beauty reclining in a lavender chiffon wrap – is signed by the artist ‘Virgilio Tojetti, Rome’ and hangs in a superb quality gold metal leaf frame.
As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in excellent condition, having just been professionally cleaned, restored and re-varnished. Clients should also note that tracked and signed for international shipping is complimentary.
Italian-born painter Virgilio Tojetti moved to Paris in the 1860s to study with Jean-Léon Gérôme and William Bouguereau. In 1870 he moved to live and work in the US, first in San Francisco, before settling in New York in 1883 where he painted important murals in the Savoy Hotel and Hoffman House. He exhibited with the Boston Art Club, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Brooklyn Art Association. Tojetti’s work was also much in demand back in Rome where he was commissioned by both Pope Gregory XVI and Pius IX.
