This is a fine 19th century English landscape oil on canvas depicting horses, chickens and pigs on a farm by the eminent Victorian painter John Frederick Herring Jr. (1820-1907). ‘The Farmyard’ is signed by the artist and is sold in a superb quality bespoke gold metal leaf frame.
As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in the finest condition it can be for its age, having just been professionally cleaned and re-varnished. Clients should also note that fully insured, tracked and signed for international shipping is complimentary.
J.F. Herring Jr. was the son of one of England’s foremost equine painters John Frederick Herring Snr. (1795-1865). Three of the latter’s sons became professional painters but John F Herring Jnr. was by far the most successful, eventually rivalling the popularity of his father.
In subject and execution, Herring Jr.’s early work was very similar to his father but he went on to develop a looser style and focused more on rural working farming scenes rather than on the aristocratic horse portraits painted by Herring Sr. From 1865 J.F. Herring Jr. exhibited at all the major London venues including the Royal Academy, the British Institution, and the Suffolk Street Gallery of the Royal Society of British Artists.
