This is large fine 19th century seascape oil on canvas of various shipping vessels caught in high seas beneath dramatic storm clouds sky by the celebrated British Victorian marine painter, Thomas Rose Miles (1844-1924). ‘The Storm’ is signed by the artist and dated 1870.
As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in excellent condition, having just been professionally cleaned and re-varnished.
Thomas Rose Miles’ great skill at capturing the ocean, and particular waves, earned him the reputation as one of Britain’s most gifted sea painters of the 19th century. Between 1869 and 1906, Miles exhibited 6 maritime paintings at the Royal Academy, 14 with the Royal Society of British Artists at the Suffolk Street Gallery, and a further 8 with the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin.
