‘The Grand Tour, Venice’ by Josef Carl Püttner (1821-1881).

The painting – which depicts a group of 19th century Grand Tourists on the Riva degli Schiavoni waiting for a boat trip on the Grand Canal in Venice – is signed by the artist and dated 1879.

Josef Püttner was an eminent mid-19th century painter of naval seascapes and romantic vedute scenes. Based principally in Vienna and Italy, he was a founder member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus and exhibited regularly at the Academy of Fine Arts. In the second quarter of the 19th century, he became the official court painter to Emperor Franz Josef of Austria.

Today works by Püttner are held in the collections of the National Military History Museum in Vienna and the German Historical Museum in Berlin.
