This is a fine 19th century oil on canvas of a young Belgian girl at the threshold of an old cottage surrounded by baskets of fruit and vegetables by the eminent Victorian artist, Oliver Rhys (exh.1876-1893). Rhys was particularly famous for his detailed figural paintings of classical maidens and beautiful young peasant girls. The very beautiful work being sold here is signed by the artist and inscribed ‘Anvers, 1883’, indicating that it was painted in Antwerp.

Between 1876 and 1893, Rhys exhibited eight works at the Royal Academy in addition to numerous others at the prestigious Grosvenor Gallery, and the Suffolk Street Gallery of the Royal Society of British Artists.
