This is a large fine mid-19th century English landscape oil on canvas of a boy fishing at a lock ‘On the Stour’ by the world famous British artist, Edward Robert Smythe (1810 – 1899). The painting is signed by the artist and sold with superb provenance, with dealer’s labels verso of previous sales circa 1920/30s from McConnal-Mason and Ackermann & Johnson.

Together with his brother Thomas, Edward Robert Smythe was one of the foremost painters of the Suffolk and Norwich Schools, along with contemporaries and friends such as John Sell Cotman and Frederick Ladbrooke. A highly gifted painter, Smythe specialised in landscapes and coastal scenes of East Anglia. This particular work features one of the locks on the River Stour, such as Dedham and Flatford, made famous by John Constable.

Smythe attracted commissions from eminent patrons such as the Earl of Cardigan, and exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, and the Royal Society of British Artists between 1850 and 1861.
