This is a large fine 19th century oil on canvas depicting a family of gypsies camped on a ridge overlooking a magnificent river valley with a settlement visible in the distance by the famous early Victorian landscape painter Henry Jutsum (1816-1869). The painting is signed by the artist, and was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1842.
Henry Jutsum studied under the eminent 19th century landscape painter James Stark (1794-1859) and his work inevitably reflects the influence of the Norwich School and the Dutch Golden Age Masters, Meindert Hobbema and Jacob Van Ruisdael.
Jutsum first exhibited at the Royal Academy aged just 20 in 1836, and went on to show another 67 paintings at there. He also exhibited 75 works with the British Institution and 19 at the Suffolk Street Gallery of the Royal Society of British Artists.
Paintings by Jutsum are held in the Royal Collection, and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
