‘On the Conwy, North Wales’ by Charles Smith (1841-1917)

The painting is signed by the artist and dated 1869 in which year it was exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists at the Suffolk Street Gallery in London.

Charles Smith was born in Cambridgeshire but moved to London in 1856 where he was apprenticed to the picture restorer Benjamin Roberts of Greenwich. The following year aged just 16 he made his debut at the Royal Academy and, as a popular and successful painter of English and Welsh landscapes, would go on to exhibit there for the next five decades. Few artists can boast of having exhibited at the major London venues for over sixty years and it is surprising that he was never elected a full member of the Royal Society of British Artists where he exhibited almost annually until 1893.

Between 1857 and 1918 Charles Smith exhibited 55 paintings at Royal Academy, 145 at Royal Society of British Artists, and 30 at the British Institution in addition to numerous other venues.
