Jean-Gabriel Domergue studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and began exhibiting at the Salon Des Artistes aged just 17. In 1913, he was awarded a silver medal in the prestigious Prix de Rome and, as a consequence, spent a year living and working in Italy. From the 1920s onwards Domergue was perhaps the most fashionable painter of society beauties and prominent actresses and dancers such as Josephine Baker, Liane de Pougy, Gina Lollobrigida, and Nadine Tallier. Domergue also designed dresses and hats for various Paris fashion houses and played an important role in the evolution of women’s fashion. Domergue was made Knight of the Legion of Honour and a Fellow of the French Academy of Fine Arts.
