Luis Jiménez Aranda (1845-1928).

The painting - which depicts  large fine oil painting is signed by the artist, inscribed and dated 1880. The smaller study for the masterwork offered here sold at Sotheby’s, London in 1999 for £77,000. ‘Le Concours de Violon’ hangs in its original water gilded exhibition frame.

Luis Aranda initially studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Seville before moving to Rome in 1868 to study with the Spain’s foremost artist of the period Marià Fortuny (1838-1874). Here Aranda began painting historical costume scenes similar to those that would be developed in Florence by Vittorio Reggianini (1858-1938) and Frederic Soulacroix (1858-1933).

In 1874 Aranda moved to Paris in 1876 and began his long association with France’s most important art dealer Adolphe Goupil. His successes at the annual Paris Salon were augmented by awards at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid and the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, and in 1877 he became a French citizen.

After becoming friends with the Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro, Aranda’s style changed quite dramatically, and he achieved further acclaim as a sensitive painter of social realism.
