La Fête au Château

  • Additional Information

‘La Fête au Château’ by Maurice Blum (1832-1909). The painting is signed by the artist and dated 1872.

Maurice Blum studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de Lyon from 1846 to 1850. He first exhibited at the Lyon Salon of 1858 before moving to Paris in 1864 to study with François-Édouard Picot (1786-1868) and Alfred Stevens (1823-1906). Like Picot and Stevens, Blum excelled in detailed figure painting and exhibited in Paris from 1864 to 1891. His success came despite the emergence of Impressionism and although his realist style fell out of fashion, unlike Stevens, Blum stayed true to Realism and was no less of an innovate for it. In 1875 Blum was the first painter to capture the performers at the newly opened Le Cirque Fernando in Montmartre years ahead of Renoir, Degas, and Toulouse-Lautrec.
