‘In Glen Nevis’ by Sidney Edward Paget (1860-1908). The painting – which depicts an angler fishing at the lower falls of the River Nevis in the Scottish Highlands – is signed by the artist and presented in a superb quality handmade water gilded frame.

All our paintings are offered in the finest condition they can be for their age having been newly professionally cleaned, conserved and re-varnished. Clients should also note that tracked and signed for international shipping is complimentary.

Sidney Paget began studying at the Royal Academy Schools in 1881. Between 1878 and 1905 he exhibited 18 paintings at the Royal Academy and many others at the Society of British Artists and the New Gallery, but it was his work for The Strand Magazine that was to make him famous. In 1891 Paget began illustrating the Sherlock Holmes stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and as surely as the latter gave the great detective his unforgettable character it was the former who provided Holmes with his iconic profile, deerstalker cap, and Inverness cape.

Sidney Paget’s international fame as an illustrator would overshadow his huge talent as a painter but his portraits and landscapes are clearly the work of an artist of enormous quality and are as fine as they are rare.
