This is a fine 19th century oil on canvas depicting a young mother and three children ‘Gathering Kindling’ for firewood in a coastal woodland by the distinguished English landscape painter Edward Henry Holder (1847-1922). The painting is signed by the artist and dated 1882. It is sold here in its original gilded Victorian frame.

Edward Henry Holder was a successful Victorian painter of English and Welsh landscapes. Between 1864 and 1917 he exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, and the Royal Society of British Artists where 33 paintings were shown between 1866 and 1894.
