A large 19th century oil on canvas depicting an extensive view of the Ducal Palace and St. Mark’s Square where hundreds of revellers in costumes and masks celebrate the ‘Carnevale di Venezia’. William James is widely considered to have been the first English follower of Canaletto and was himself succeeded by William Wyld and Edward Pritchett who also painted in the style of the Venetian Master.
