John Syer enjoyed a long and successful painter of English and Welsh landscapes, first exhibiting in London during the reign of William IV and for the last time in the year of his death over half a century later. Following the lead of David Cox and J.M.W. Turner, Syer travelled extensively in North Wales and, as witnessed in the painting being offered here, many of his finest landscapes capture the wild terrain of Snowdonia. John Syer was elected a full member of both the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and the Royal Society of British Artists in 1857.

Between 1832 and his death in 1885, Syer exhibited 19 paintings at the Royal Academy, 68 at the Royal Society of British Artists, 11 at the British Institution, and many more at the New Watercolour Society and the Grosvenor Gallery.
