Hans Makart (1840-1884) was perhaps the most important Viennese academic history painter of the 19th century and a huge influence on the artistic culture of Vienna in the final quarter of the century. A major inspiration to Gustav Klimt and what became known as the Vienna Succession, Hans Makart was at the centre of European Art Nouveau movement. Heinrich Hans Schlimarski was a celebrated Orientalist painter of the Belle Epoque and considered the most gifted student of Makart. Together they collaborated on several of the former's larger paintings.
