Thomas Creswick studied with Vincent Barber (1788–1838) at the family’s Birmingham Academy and like the Barbers and his contemporary Samuel Lines, Creswick’s work typifies the best of the mid-19th century generation of Birmingham School landscape painters. Having had numerous paintings accepted at the principal London exhibition venues, Creswick moved to the capital in 1827 and quickly earned a reputation as a fine painter of picturesque English and Welsh river landscapes. A subtle colourist and a sound draftsman, Creswick’s work garnered praise from critics such as John Ruskin and popularity with the late Georgian and Victorian art buying public.
Between 1828 and 1870 Thomas Creswick exhibited 139 paintings at the Royal Academy, 80 at the British Institution, and 46 with the Royal Society of British Artists at the Suffolk Street Gallery. Creswick was elected a full member of the Royal Academy in 1850.
