In 1837 Jacques-Eugène Feyen began studying under Paul Delaroche at the École des Beaux-Arts. Between 1841 and 1882 he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon and was awarded medals in 1866 and 1880. Among Feyen’s admirers was Vincent van Gogh who described him as “one of the few painters who pictures intimate modern life as it really is and does not turn it into fashion plates.”
When the ‘Mona Lisa’ was stolen from the Louvre in 1913 it was Feyen’s copy of La Giaconda that temporarily replaced it on the museum wall until Leonardo’s original was recovered. Jacques-Eugène Feyen was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur in 1881.
