‘The Nurse Maid’ by Edwin Longsden Long R.A. (1829-1891)

The painting – which depicts a Spanish ama de cria cradling a young child – is signed with the artist’s monogram and hangs in a newly commissioned gold metal leaf frame.

Edwin Long studied at James Matthew Leigh’s academy in London before travelling to Spain with one of Britain’s foremost Orientalist painters John Phillip (1817-1867). Beginning in 1874 Long made an extensive tour of North Africa and the Levant making sketches that would form the basis of some of the most recognisable Orientalist paintings of the 19th century. Edwin Long’s detailed and well-researched subject pictures of the people and customs of ‘The Orient’ found huge popularity with the public and drew praise from John Ruskin and other critics of the time. By the 1880’s, Long’s paintings were commanding the largest prices of any living artist in Britain.

Between 1855 and 1891 Edwin Long exhibited 93 paintings at the Royal Academy and numerous others at the British Institution and the Royal Society of British Artists. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1881.
