‘Carnevale di Venezia’ by James Holland RWS (1799-1870).

The painting – which depicts an extensive view of the Grand Canal with hundreds of masked revellers before the Ducal Palace at the entrance to St. Mark’s Square – hangs in a fine quality gold metal leaf frame.

Although primarily a watercolour painter, James Holland was equally comfortable working in oils and is regarded today as one of the finest colourists of the 19th century British School.

Holland’s oils of Venice show two quite different stylistic phases; the first demonstrating his precise draftsmanship lasted until around 1845 and a second period thereafter in which his execution became much loser and his colouring even more vibrant. This has led to some confusion over the attribution of some of his work. His name has also been mistakenly attached to several paintings by the Victorian landscape painter John Holland (1830-1886) of Nottingham but their techniques, subjects, and in particular palettes are quite different.

Between 1815 and 1869 James Holland exhibited 32 pictures at the Royal Academy, 91 at the British Institution, 108 at the Society of British Artists, and 194 at the Old Watercolour Society.
