‘The Grand Tour, Venice’ by Josef Carl Püttner (1821-1881).
The painting – which depicts a group of 19th century Grand Tourists on the Riva degli Schiavoni waiting for a boat trip on the Grand Canal in Venice – is signed by the artist and dated 1879.
Josef Püttner was an eminent mid-19th century painter of naval seascapes and romantic vedute scenes. Based principally in Vienna and Italy, he was a founder member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus and exhibited regularly at the Academy of Fine Arts.
