Charles Calderon was born in Paris and studied with Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889) at the École des Beaux-Arts. Like Felix Ziem (1821-1911), Calderon was a popular painter of Mediterranean vedute, in particular scenes of Venice. A regular exhibitor at the Salon des Artistes, Calderon also contributed paintings to the 1906 Colonial Exposition in Paris. He died prematurely that same year, aged just 36.
