‘Charles I on the Phoenix Tower’ by Robert Alexander Hillingford (1825-1904).
The painting – which depicts the King on the fortified city walls of Chester having just witnessed the rout of his army at the Battle of Rowton Heath – is signed by the artist and presented in a fine quality gold metal leaf frame.
Rowton Heath saw the comprehensive defeat of the last significant Royalist force in England and Charles I is said to have watched the battle with dignified stoicism from the Phoenix Tower alongside the Mayor of Chester Sir Francis Gamul.
Today, the inscription upon the tower states: ‘King Charles stood on this tower, September 24th, 1645, and saw his army defeated on Rowton Moor.’
