‘Elizabeth and Dudley, Doubt’ by John Robert Dicksee (1817-1905).

The painting – which depicts Queen Elizabeth I deep in thought whilst gazing at her favourite, the Earl of Dudley – is signed by the artist with monogram. In 1870 the painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in London.

John Robert Dicksee was the first of an eminent family of British painters of highly detailed and luxurious subject pictures. Dicksee was a master at telling a story – invariably historical – in his paintings and excelled at portraying figures and fabrics.

The uncle of the future President of the Royal Academy, Sir Frank Dicksee (1853-1928), John Robert Dicksee exhibited 45 paintings at the Royal Academy, 13 with the Royal Society of British Artists, and a further 6 at the British Institution.
