‘Poppaea Sabina’ by William Henry Longmaid (1834-1919). The painting is signed by the artist and dated 1887, and presented in a fine quality, newly commissioned, bespoke gold metal leaf frame. Poppaea Sabina (AD 30-65) was the notorious second wife of the Roman Emperor Nero, renowned for both her great beauty and ruthless ambition.

William Henry Longmaid was one of a number of artists working in London in the last quarter of the 19th century who devoted themselves to romantic scenes of ancient Rome and Greece. Like ‘Olympians’ Frederick Lord Leighton, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Sir Edward John Poynter and Joseph Albert Moore, Longmaid’s favourite subject was the great beauties of the ancient world.


Between 1890 and 1899, William Henry Longmaid exhibited at the Royal Academy in London, the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, the City Art Gallery in Leeds and with the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists.
