A fine 19th century portrait oil on canvas depicting a distinguished Scottish Highland clansman in a Tam-o-Shanter and the Shepherd’s Plaid by the celebrated Royal Academy painter Robert Alexander Hillingford (1828-1904). The painting is signed by the artist and sold in its original Victorian carved giltwood frame.
As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in excellent condition, having just been professionally cleaned and re-varnished. Clients should also note that tracked and signed for international shipping is complimentary.
Robert Alexander Hillingford was a highly successful Victorian painter of historical and literary scenes. He is most famous for his highly detailed paintings of the Napoleonic Wars as well as Shakespearian subjects. Between 1864 and 1902 Hillingford exhibited 29 works at the Royal Academy, and numerous others the British Institution, and the Royal Society of British Artists in London.
