This is a very large fine 19th century oil painting depicting the famous German actress Lili Marberg as a dryad draped in diaphanous fabrics by the eminent Bohemian painter Leopold Schmutzler (1864-1940). ‘The Wood Nymph’ is signed by the artist and presented in a fine quality giltwood salon frame.

As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in excellent condition, having just been professionally cleaned and re-varnished. Clients should also note that tracked and signed for international shipping is complimentary.

One of Europe’s foremost portraitist of the late 19th and early 20th century, Leopold Schmutzler became famous for his elegant salon paintings of beautiful, scantily-dressed young women. From 1880 he trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, and thence in Munich where he received commissions from the Bavarian royal family.
