This is a large fine 19th century Victorian landscape oil on canvas depicting an atmospheric nocturnal scene of dark figures walking at ‘Liverpool’ docks – lit by the glow of gas lights – by the very popular British artist and former pupil of John Atkinson Grimshaw, Wilfred Jenkins (1859-1944). The painting is signed by the artist and is the finest example of Jenkins’ work I have ever come across. It is sold in a newly commissioned fine quality giltwood frame.

As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in the finest condition it can be for its age, having just been professionally cleaned and re-varnished. Clients should also note that fully insured, tracked and signed for international shipping is complimentary.

Living and working in the city of Leeds in the late 19th century it was perhaps inevitable that Wilfred Jenkins would become heavily influenced by that famous painter of Victorian nocturnes John Atkinson Grimshaw, who also lived in the city. Jenkins became one of Grimshaw’s most gifted pupils and his moonlit nocturnal scenes of Victorian England greatly resemble those of his master.
