This is a large fine 19th century oil on canvas depicting a typically beautiful scene over ‘The Grand Canal, Venice’ towards the Ducal Palace, St. Mark’s Square and the Santa Maria della Salute by the eminent Victorian landscape artist Alfred Pollentine (1836-1890). The painting is signed by the artist and dated 1871. This is without question the finest work by Pollentine I have ever seen.
As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in the very finest condition it can be for its age, having just been professionally cleaned and re-varnished.
Alfred Pollentine has become famous for his striking landscapes of 19th century Venice. Between 1861 and 1880 Pollentine exhibited many works at both the British Institute and the Royal Society of British Artists in London though his work was in such high demand he never replied upon exhibition sales to make a living.
