• Additional Information

This is a fine large 19th century oil on canvas depicting a young brother and sister who have taken ‘A Break in Play’ to watch their mother prepare a mid-morning snack, by the eminent Victorian artist Harry Brooker (1849-1940). This beautifully executed, detailed work is signed by the artist and dated 1884. It is presented in its magnificent original 19th century pierced and swept gilt frame.

A very popular and successful genre scene painter, Brooker was a master of the utterly charming domestic scene, almost always featuring children at play. Between 1876 and 1908 Harry Brooker exhibited at the Royal Academy, and at the Suffolk Street Gallery of the Royal Society of British Artists in London.

Like many British genre painters of the period Brooker was influenced by the Dutch Golden Age artists such as Pieter de Hooch (1629-1684) and Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) but few had his technical skill and eye for detail.
