This is a fine 19th century portrait oil on canvas of a young woman in a bonnet by the eminent Victorian painter William Arthur Breakspeare (1855-1914). The painting is signed by the artist and typical of the artist’s finest work.

 

Regarded as a founder member of the Newlyn School and the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, William Breakspeare exhibited 34 paintings at the RBSA between 1874 and 1899. Breakspeare became famous for his period genre scenes and unmistakable portraits of beautiful young women.

 

William Breakspeare exhibited 21 works at the Royal Academy between 1891 and 1914, and many others with the Royal Society of British Artists and the Grosvenor Gallery in London.
