This is a large fine 19th century oil on canvas of the famous ruins of ‘Bolton Abbey’ in Yorkshire by the celebrated Victorian painter, Henry Bright (1814-1873).

 

By the time Queen Victoria purchased Bright’s ‘Entrance to an Old Prussian Town’ in 1844, he was well on the way to becoming one of Britain’s most popular landscape painters. Mentored by John Sell Cotman and John Berney Crome, and championed by John Ruskin, Henry Bright went on to become a leading member of the influential Norwich School of British painters.

 

Henry Bright exhibited 12 works at the Royal Academy, 26 at the British Institution and 11 at the Suffolk Street Gallery of the Society of British Artists.
