• Additional Information

This is fine early 19th century oil on canvas of an English warship of a 30 gun frigate of the Blue Squadron in high winds ‘Off Calais’ by the famous British maritime artist, George Webster (fl.1797-1832). This superbly detailed 200 year old oil painting of a Royal Navy frigate surrounded by numerous fishing boats off the French coast is a magnificent example of the work of one of the most gifted British marine painters of the 19th century.

Between 1797 and 1832 George Webster exhibited 14 paintings at the Royal Academy, 11 at the British Institution, and 4 with the Society of British Artists at the Suffolk Street Gallery. Paintings by George Webster hang in numerous important collections of maritime fine art, including the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich.

Webster’s celebrated pictures of Men-O’-War off the coasts of England and France are enduringly popular as both works of art, and invaluable records of British maritime history, and place him amongst the most eminent British Marine artists.
