This is a large 18th century oil painting portrait of a beautiful dark haired young woman in a white silk dress
by the famous English portrait painter Francis Cotes (1726-1770). The painting dates to circa 1760, and is sold in what is likely to be its original 18th century English neoclassical giltwood frame.
As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in excellent condition, having just been professionally cleaned and re-varnished.
Francis Cotes trained under the eminent portrait painter George Knapton. By the mid 1860’s he had become one of the most fashionable and sought-after portrait painters in London and a serious rival to Thomas Gainsborough and Joshua Reynolds. In just two years, between 1769 and his death aged just 44 in 1770, Cotes exhibited 18 works at the nascent Royal Academy. Cotes was a founder member of both the Society of Artists of Great Britain and of the Royal Academy.
