This is a large fine 19th century landscape oil on canvas depicting an entire family and their dog working in a wheat field in summer by the Royal Academy artist Alfred Bennett (exh.1861-1880). ‘Helping with the Harvest’ is signed and dated 1868, and is as fine an example of the artist’s work as I have ever seen.
As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in superb condition, having just been professionally cleaned and re-varnished.
In style and technique Alfred Bennett’s work is quite similar that of his contemporary Alfred Augustus Glendening (1840-1910). Bennett was renowned for his detailed landscapes often featuring stately homes and castles of Southern England. Bennet exhibited a total of 23 works at the Royal Academy, British Institution, and Royal Society of British Artists. Oils by Alfred Bennett have sold at Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Bonhams.
