This is a very large fine 19th century oil on canvas depicting a small flock of sheep on a hillside path before an extensive English summer landscape viewed from the Surrey Hills by the celebrated Royal Academy painter George William Mote (1832-1909). ‘A View in Surrey’ is signed by the artist and dated 1883. The painting is presented in its original 19th century giltwood Watts frame.
Between 1857 and 1877 G.W. Mote exhibited 15 paintings at the Royal Academy, 18 works at the Suffolk Street Gallery of the Royal Society of British Artists, and 5 with the British Institution in London.
