This is a very large fine early 20th century French Post-Impressionist oil on canvas depicting the people and buildings of Montmartre in Paris by the famous French painter Alphonse Leon Quizet (1885-1955). ‘Maison à Montmartre’ is signed by the artist.

When this picture was last sold by Christie’s Knightsbridge in 2014 it was in less than good condition with areas of paint loss, yet still achieved around $7,000. We have had the picture professionally restored and re-varnished. The new owner – should they have the money and inclination – might like to have the painting technically examined by a relevant research facility as there is undoubtedly another painting underneath. It was common amongst artists of this period in Paris to re-use their own unsold canvases and I believe a look at the painting under infrared radiation would reveal a previously unknown work by Quizet beneath. Over to Phillip Mould and Fiona Bruce!

Alphonse Leon Quizet was an important member of the School of Montmartre during the early 20th century along with Elisee Maclet, Gen Paul, Marcel Leprin, Lucien Génin and Quizet’s protégé, Maurice Utrillo. Utrillo might never have been ‘Utrillo’ without the influence of Maclet and the guidance of Quizet. Quizet and Utrillo often painted the same subject matter, and frequently together.

Alphonse Quizet was made a member of the Salon d’Automne in 1926 and named Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur in 1931. Between 1907 and 1955, his work was exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon Paris Moderne and the Salon des Tuilleries.
