A large fine 19th century oil on canvas depicting an evening river sunset ‘On the Thames near Shillingford’ in Oxfordshire by the eminent Victorian artist Robert Gallon (1845-1925). The painting is signed by the artist and hangs in a superb quality newly commissioned bespoke gold metal leaf swept frame. There has been a bridge over the River Thames at Shillingford since the 14th century. It was reconstructed in stone in 1827 and still stands, unchanged, today.
As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in the finest condition it can be for its age, having been professionally cleaned and re-varnished. Clients should also note that fully insured, tracked and signed for international shipping is complimentary.
One of the finest late Victorian landscape painters, Robert Gallon’s skill and attention to detail is comparable to that of his contemporary Benjamin Williams Leader. Between 1868 to 1903 Robert Gallon exhibited 32 works at The Royal Academy and 27 at the British Institution in London.
